By Kent Penning, Founder of Cold Craft, Inc.
Cold Craft, Inc. works in the San Francisco Bay Area on commercial and residential heating, cooling and refrigeration. One of the more recent jobs we completed at a grocer is the frozen equipment upgrade for a family owned chain, Chavez Markets.
The project consisted of:
- Installing new Zero Zone Cases the most energy efficient cases available.
- Conversion of the refrigerant to an more environmentally friendly gas (from R-22 to R-404A)
- Replacement of the compressor with the more modern, energy efficient Bitzer compressor.
This is the newest addition to the local grocers that Cold Craft has assisted in becoming energy efficient. Two other market chains Zanotto’s and Gene’s Fine Foods have also made a lot of progress recently with energy efficient changes. Their focus is not only to provide fresh delicious food to their customers, but to do so in an earth friendly way.
Perhaps we forget how much energy grocers use because we are only in the store for a short period of time but this equipment is used for food it is important to run continuously throughout the day with a total running time of 16 to 18 hours a day. Any energy efficient measure will help the earth because of the amount of time it runs and the expectation of the equipment to keep our food safe. These changes to energy efficient cases, cooling towers, compressors, computerized systems and alarms say loud and clear that these grocers put their money where their mouth is when it comes in spending on what matters, environment and food safety through installing updated equipment.
The newer equipment and cases not only look new, clean and modern, but they can be a big upgrade in sound performance as well. Pete Russell, the Bitzer Compressor Rep promoted how smooth and well balanced the Bitzer compressors are compared to other compressors. After installing these units we found that they are very quiet, which makes for a better shopping experience during that weekly trip to the grocers.
If you treasure the environment you should support these specialty grocers that are taking steps for food safety and preserving the earth.
