Kysor/Warren, a division of Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration, is pleased to announce the opening of a new EPA GreenChill platinum certified store in Columbus, Georgia.  This store was built through a close partnership with Piggly Wiggly and is one of a small number of stores in the nation that have earned the highest possible certification for its environmentally friendly refrigeration system from the EPA GreenChill program and only the second store in Georgia.

According to the EPA, a typical supermarket leaks approximately 1,000lbs of harmful refrigerant gas into the atmosphere every year. GreenChill Platinum Certified Stores reduce those emissions by at least 95%.  This store further exceeds even those standards with an annual global warming impact to only a fraction of 1% of a traditional store using hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as the refrigerant.

“Piggly Wiggly’s commitment to achieve GreenChill certification standards for its new store proves that the company is serious about its role in protecting the ozone layer and preventing climate change,” said Tom Land, manager of the EPA GreenChill Partnership. “It is important that companies understand that helping the environment has become the business model of the future.”

The cascade refrigeration system design utilizes ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as refrigerants in a cascade arrangement.  Through innovative design, Kysor/Warren has reduced the amount of ammonia refrigerant to only 3/4 lb per ton of refrigeration totaling 53 lbs, all of which is confined to the roof of the supermarket.  Minimizing the ammonia charge eliminates the need for on-site engineers and other requirements typically associated with ammonia applications.  This market leading HFC-free solution has zero ozone depletion potential and virtually eliminates global warming impact when compared to traditional HFC refrigeration systems.   In addition to providing significant direct emissions benefits, the Kysor/Warren NH3/CO2 cascade system can provide significant energy savings versus both traditional HFC systems and CO2 transcritical systems in many climates.  Finally, this cascade system design is also highly configurable and can be designed with other high-side refrigerants to meet individual retailer preferences.

“As environmental impact and sustainability have gained attention, many retailers are turning to us to ensure they have the most sustainable refrigeration systems possible,” states Michael Lehtinen, Marketing Director for Kysor/Warren.  “We are working with our customers to implement market-leading HFC-free solutions to ensure that we not only help our customers minimize environmental footprint, but also maximize savings and operational benefits.”

Piggly Wiggly #444, located at 2424 Woodruff Farm Road in Columbus, Georgia, opened September 9, 2015.  In addition to using natural refrigerants, the refrigeration system also recovers heat to save energy in the hot water system.  The store features several other energy-saving features, including skylights and LED ambient lighting throughout the store and doors on all beverage, preserved meat and dairy refrigerated cases.
