Before you call us with a no heat problem, here are some suggestions to try to fix your furnace.

Not having heat when it is cold is never convenient, but if you have children or older people in your home it can become a more urgent situation – even in the temperate Silicon Valley

More times than not the solution to your heating problem is just a click or a battery change away.  No need to call and pay for a professional heating expert before you rule out the more common issues. In the colder weather, heating companies receive more calls which means that you may be waiting for service.  Try these tips and maybe you will have heat in a snap.

  • Sometimes a battery operated thermostat has old or dead batteries.  If your thermostat is battery operated, try replacing the batteries, one indication of a battery issue is a weak or missing display.
  • Check if the thermostat is set higher than the current temperature (so it is asking the furnace for heat).  If the setting is below the current temperature the furnace will not go on.
  • If you turn off your heat in the summer or have air conditioning, it is possible that the thermostat is in the wrong mode.  Make sure that the thermostat is in heat mode and not in A/C or off modes.  Also try moving the temperature lever or dial of the thermostat up and down a couple of degrees to get it to kick on.
  • Make sure that the switch to furnace (usually located on the wall next to the furnace) is in ‘on’ position. This switch can be accidently turned off if brushed against or perhaps it was purposely turned off for the summer.  Many times this switch looks like a common light switch.
  • It is possible that the circuit breaker was tripped.  Try resetting the circuit breaker. ***A word of caution, if others are troubleshooting the furnace also make sure they are aware that you are turning the power back on to the furnace.  If it trips again, it could indicate a serious problem and should be checked into.  How to reset a breaker.
  • If you have a pilot light make sure it is lit.  Keep in mind many newer furnaces do not have a constant pilot light.  It may be time
  • As always change your filter regularly, it can cause the furnace to also shut down.
